Queer Here
2011
Queer Here is a multi-media performance of transgender visibility. The story oscillates between the artist’s corporeal experience and the shifting perceptions of their transitional body. When gender expression evolves from that which is applied to that which is embodied how should one publically perform queerness?

Queer Here combines storytelling, performance, and video to produce transgender/genderqueer visibility. The artist narrates with accompanying projections to illustrate sections of the story. The work is comprised of 3 main segments involving the slow reveal of the artists’ body which leads into a short video/audio piece about performing trans visibility in the public. The audience is guided through the artist’s point of view to understanding shifts in identity and embodiment. The live evidence of the artist’s nude body then illustrates this evolution.

The narrative content of Queer Here keeps the audience engaged and laughing while pointing at the permeability of binary gender constructions. Topics include trans visibility, government issued IDs, bearded ladies, international travel and gender faux pas in the men’s restroom.
